REFORM plays to the tune of sustainability

When most of us think “recycling,” we don’t also immediately think “music.” But innovative students at Iowa State are collaborating across disciplines to find the perfect harmony between materials science, reducing waste, and creating new musical instruments. In the Recyclables Evolved from Offscouring Remade to Music (REFORM) project, students from areas in engineering, particularly materials science and engineering, are working together with students in music and theatre to reduce plastic waste at Iowa State by gathering plastic materials and transforming them into durable plastic musical instruments.

Iowa State hosted the Student Innovation Center’s official dedication and ribbon-cutting (SICTR) Thursday, years after an anonymous donation spurred the idea into existence. The SICTR first opened in August of 2020 but recently held the dedication and ribbon-cutting in honor of the countless workspaces and state-of-the-art pieces of equipment that now inhabit the facility.

Sculptural milk-crate installation highlights public engagement strategies

Members of the Iowa State University community likely are familiar with the large, blue metal “Sequence” sculpture in front of the College of Design building on the west side of campus. Now, a team of students led by Chad Hunter, a lecturer in landscape architecture and outreach studio manager for the Iowa’s Living Roadways Community Visioning Program, has installed another blue sculpture, “Threshold” — a public engagement tool that will be on display over the next two weeks.

Iowa Students to Hear from NASA Astronauts Aboard Space Station

NASA astronauts Shane Kimbrough and Megan McArthur will answer prerecorded questions from students who participated in Astro Camps across the state this past summer. The Student Innovation Center at Iowa State University and other locations across the state will host watch parties for this virtual event.

Innovation Fellows program allows students to make an impact

The Student Innovation Center launched the Innovation Fellows Program during the 2020-2021 academic year. The program is an interdisciplinary professional practice program open to all Iowa State Students in every college. George Washington Carver to be built of LEGO bricks throughout Iowa State Fair at ISU exhibit

This year’s ISU exhibit at the Iowa State Fair – “Ignite Innovation Showcase On the Road” – will be in the Varied Industries building Aug. 12-22. An ISU graduate will build a life-sized LEGO version of one of the university’s most widely-recognized innovative graduates: George Washington Carver. Colleges and units will demonstrate innovation happening in their areas, and ISU and high school teams will compete in a daily LEGO building challenge.

When the COVID-19 pandemic forced the Iowa State community to migrate online for the remainder of spring semester, the Student Innovation Center’s April grand opening was put on the back burner.

However, construction, landscaping and equipment installation pushed forward. Today, students, faculty and staff are working to ensure the building is ready to open to campus when fall semester begins Aug. 17. Facilities planning and management announced in late June the building had received a certificate of full occupancy from the state of Iowa.
