There’s no better place to find a better way
Are you a student looking to study, collaborate, or start a new innovative project? Are you a faculty member teaching a class? Or are you a member of the community wanting to support student entrepreneurs? No matter who you are, the Student Innovation Center has something for you.
With more than 140,000-square-feet of multi-functional space, plus a series of online programs, the center is here to support your passion for learning, innovating, and creating.
SPARKS is a 100% student-run café on the fourth floor of the Student Innovation Center. Operated by the College of Human Science’s Apparel, Events and Hospitality Department (AESHM), the cafe embodies the spirit of innovation in every way, from the unique products served to the inspiring strategy it uses to support the students working behind the counter.
Students are fully responsible for managing the café, and are learning to manage daily business decisions about factors such as inventory, food safety, hiring and salaries, product pricing, marketing, and defining sales strategies.
It also values the entrepreneurial mindset by serving its own coffee blend created by an Iowa State University alum. In addition, SPARKS most recently collaborated with ISU Creamery, the university’s dairy food service program, to start serving 8-ounce containers of the creamery’s unique ice cream flavors.
Innovate 1858, located on the entry-level of the Student Innovation Center, is best described as part lifestyle boutique, part museum shop.
Managed and supported by the Apparel, Events, and Hospitality Management Department (AESHM) in the College of Human Sciences, the goal of the store is to spur students in their creative endeavors through hands-on retail experience and entrepreneurial innovation.
Numerous products designed or created by Iowa State University students are for sale. The student-operated retail store features the new tartan plaid — designed by an alumna of the apparel, merchandising, and design program — in products such as scarves, neck-ties, mugs, and t-shirts. While the products will vary depending on students’ current endeavors, visitors may find student-made jewelry or clothing to candles and flower pots.
ISU Printing Services is conveniently located on the second floor, at the top of the grand staircase, in the Student Innovation Center. This location is geared and staffed to handle the print needs that students, faculty, staff and other ISU units have from course materials to posters.
ISU Printing Services offers a variety of products and services, including:
- offset printing;
- digital printing;
- posters, banners and signage;

Their primary location for larger and more complex jobs is located in the Printing & Publication building on the north side of campus.
Customers can pay with credit/debit cards or cash. Students can also charge to their Ubill for all printing services or use printing credits to print standard 8.5 x 11 files in both black and white and color. For an estimated price for your next project, contact ISU Printing Services at email@example.com or visit their website.
The Student Innovation Center showcases and celebrates the innovations taking place across campus within its rotating exhibition space. It is located on the entry-levl of the facility and is viewable during the center’s open hours.
The space’s first exhibit, Exhibition Innovation, featuring unique displays from each of the university’s seven colleges, was unveiled in summer 2021. It will be viewable to the public through the end of the fall 2021 semester.
Displays featured will vary each year, and are managed by Exhibitions Coordinator Rachel Connell.
