AMES, Iowa — The Innovation Challenge Competition 2024 at Iowa State University has been a resounding success, showcasing the creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurial spirit of our diverse student body. This year’s competition attracted participants from various colleges and majors, highlighting the interdisciplinary nature of innovation and the power of collaboration.
The three winning teams of the Innovation Challenge Competition 2024 exemplify the incredible potential of our student innovators to make a positive impact on the world. The teams will receive funding and support to pursue their creative concepts in the coming year.

Chef Buddy
This innovative app aims to make cooking approachable for beginners by teaching foundational cooking skills through interactive lessons and challenges. By empowering users to cook healthier meals at home, reducing reliance on unhealthy takeout options, and fostering a community of learning and support, ChefBuddy has the potential to promote good health and well-being, facilitate social connectivity, and support economic well-being.

Kinetic Facade Development for Smart Buildings
This project involves the design and prototyping of kinetic facades to enhance the sustainability of buildings by optimizing natural light and ventilation. By focusing on three prototypes that promote ventilation, manage light with UV-responsive fabric, and utilize photovoltaic technology for energy production, these innovative facades aim to significantly reduce energy consumption and contribute to sustainable urban development, aligning with the Sustainable Cities & Communities goal.

The LAB Room
This innovative leadership development workshop, structured within an escape room format, uses interpersonal puzzles to foster leadership skills. By providing an experiential learning platform that integrates leadership development with practical application, the LAB Room aims to enhance Quality Education and impact businesses and organizations by improving leadership quality, leading to greater innovation and the ability to tackle larger societal challenges.

The competition saw an impressive turnout of students from across the university, with representation from all six undergraduate colleges including: College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, College of Design, College of Engineering, College of Human Sciences, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and the Ivy College of Business.
The participating teams comprised students from a wide range of majors, including Graphic Design, Event Management, History, Communication Studies, Psychology, Mechanical Engineering, Cybersecurity Engineering, Computer Engineering, Biosystems Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Agricultural Studies, Aerospace Engineering, Biology, Industrial Design, Art and Design, Architecture, Business Management, Physiology, Electrical Engineering, and more. This diverse mix of backgrounds and expertise fostered a vibrant exchange of ideas and a truly multidisciplinary approach to problem-solving.
The Student Innovation Center received numerous applications, and after careful review, five finalist teams were selected. On Tuesday, the teams presented their ideas to a panel of industry and academic experts. Serving as judges were David and Christine Slump, both Iowa State alums and generous philanthropists who founded the Innovation Challenge Fun, Ann Marie VanDerZanden, Associate Provost for Academic Programs, Alison Doyle, Chief Relationship Officer and Director of Campus and Business Engagement at the Iowa State Research Park, Andreas Schwab, Dean’s Faculty Fellow in Management and Director of Undergraduate Entrepreneurship Programs in the Ivy College of Business; and Jim Oliver, Student Innovation Center Director.
