Making 101 wordmark on a red background.The Student Innovation Center’s free Making 101 series features workshops that activate your imagination and teach equipment and software basics in our unique Makerspaces.

Register in advance and complete the required basic workshop safety online training on Canvas for hands-on participation. Workshops are free and open to all Iowa State students, faculty, and staff.

Making 101 Workshops count as the required hands-on training to use the Makerspaces.

Electronics, Textiles and 3D Printing (Room 2222) Making 101 Workshops

    3D Printing 101

    This two-hour workshop covers basic operations of the Ultimaker S5 in the Electronics, Textiles, and 3D Printing Makerspace. Designs and fabrication materials (2.85mm PLA filament) are provided, or use your own 3D model. Bring your laptop. Workshop counts as hands-on training for the Ultimaker printer.

    Embroidery 101

    This two-hour workshop utilizes the Melco embroidery machines in the Electronics, Textiles, and 3D Printing Makerspace. Use our fabric samples or bring a fabric item — such as a hat, shirt, bag — you would like embroidered, and choose from the embroidery designs provided on site. Workshop counts as hands-on training for the melco embroidery machines.

    Laser Cutting 101

    This two-hour workshop in the Electronics, Textiles, and 3D Printing Makerspace includes supervised use of the universal laser cutters. Designs and fabrication materials are provided for participants to test creation steps. Workshop counts as hands-on training for the universal laser cutters.

Metal and Woods Making 101 Workshops (Room 1211)

  • Hand or Power Tools 101_ FEATURE SET

    Hand Tools 101

    This hour and a half long workshop is a hands-on learning experience that covers the basics of using various hand tools  in the Wood Shop. Participants will gain practical skills and knowledge in working with a range of tools including drill, driver, chisels, saws, plunge router, jig saw, impact driver, brad nailer, crown stapler, circular saw, track saw, orbital sander and sandpaper grits.

    Woodworking 101

    This two-hour workshop introduces the woodworking capabilities of the Wood Shop. Cut and finish a piece of poplar (7.5” x 12.5” x .75”), learning the basic skills for milling wood. Workshop includes hands-on training for the jointer, planer, miter saw and drum sander. Workshop counts as hands-on training for that equipment.

    This two-hour workshop covers preliminary training and an introduction to the metalworking capabilities of the Metal Shop. Learn to cut, bend, and weld sheet metal into a metal box. Workshop includes hands-on training for the baileigh shear, brake press and spot welder.

    Craft Resin 101

    This two-hour workshop provides the basics for creating with epoxy resin in the Paint and Finishing Shop. Use the provided materials — including mixed resin, molds, and wet/dry pigments — to make a keepsake or gift. Allow 24 hours before handling the craft resin creation.

    Learn about settings for photo and video cameras, the exposure triangle of shutter speed, aperture, and ISO, and basics about focus, depth of field, white balance, and lenses. Join us in the Digital Media Studio and bring a camera if you have one.

    Letterpress 101

    Make a lasting impression in the Letterpress Lab! Join printmaking faculty Raluca Iancu in a three-hour workshop where you will learn the basics setting type and letterpress printing to make your very own letterpress poster, free of cost. This workshop will count towards your hands-on training for this space. Come prepared with a word or a sentence that you would like to print.
