Join our experienced staff to try your hand at “making” in our unique Makerspaces and Studios. Learn the basics of the equipment and software to activate your imagination for future ideas. These free workshops are for the Iowa State community to explore the opportunities available in the Student Innovation Center. Basic Shop Safety Training is required for hands-on participation and can be found via the Canvas link below.
Summer Making 101 sessions will be hosted during the month of June and will be by request using the form at the bottom of the page.
A fall schedule will be announced at a later date.

Metalworking 101
This 2-hour workshop supplies preliminary training as an introduction to the metalworking capabilities of our makerspace. You’ll learn the steps of cutting and bending and welding sheet metal into a metal box; free of cost. The basic skills and understanding gained in this workshop will provide your first steps into metalworking in the Boeing Advanced Fabrication & Assembly makerspace!

Podcasting 101
Aim to grow in the Digital Media Studio! Do you have a story to tell, topics to discuss or fascinations you want to share with the world? Why not start a podcast at the Student Innovation Center’s Digital Media Studio? Learn the process of podcasting, including the basics of equipment set-up, recording techniques and editing software. Laser Cutting 101
Learn something new in 2222! The Electronics, Textiles, & 3D Printing Makerspace is located on the second level of the Student Innovation Center in room 2222. Join Makerspace staff and your fellow peers in a two hour workshop where you will learn how to use the Universal Laser Cutters. We’ll provide the designs, the wood, and it’s all free! Woodworking 101
This 2-hour workshop supplies preliminary training as an introduction to the woodworking capabilities of our makerspace. You’ll walk away with a cut & finished piece of poplar approximately 7.5” x 12.5” x ¾” free of cost. The basic skills and understanding gained in this workshop will provide your first steps into milling wood in the Boeing Advanced Fabrication & Assembly makerspace! Bring your finished wood back for the laser engraving workshop in Makerspace 2222 or many other creative opportunities!

Wood Lathe Demo
Have you seen wood chips and dust flying around the makerspace and wondered what was going on? Someone was
probably using the wood lathe, and this is your opportunity to learn more! This 2-hour demo supplies an introduction to
operating the Baileigh Wood Lathe in our makerspace. You’ll learn the initial steps of how the wood lathe functions and
get your first feel operating the equipment; free of cost. Once you get a feel for the experience come back for full training and begin creating!

Photography 101
Aim to grow in the Digital Media Studio! Photography 101 will introduce you to the fundamentals of camera settings for both photo and video. We will discuss the exposure triangle of shutter speed, aperture, and ISO as well as some basics about focus, depth of field, white balance, and lenses. If you have a camera, bring it along to the workshop. We will discuss tips and tricks to take your creative project to the next level.

Kent Mill Demo
Is machining for me? Let’s find out! This 2-hour demo supplies an introduction to operating the Kent CNC Mill in our makerspace. You’ll see the initial steps of machine set-up and how the CNC mill functions; free of cost! Learn about the moving parts and components of the equipment and check out our tutorials that step through operating basics. Now that you have ideas milling in your mind; come back for full training and begin creating!

Video Making 101
Aim to grow in the Digital Media Studio! Video Making 101 introduces the post-production process of video editing. Through Blackmagic Design’s video editing software Davinci Resolve, participants will learn about navigating the software and its functions. In this workshop, participants will learn basic video editing practices and experience enhancing a video, including color grading, adding graphics and effects.
