The Student Innovation Center hosted All Makers Eve on October 31st from 6-9 pm, and with approximately 300 students in attendance, it was truly a night of innovation and Halloween Fun!
Attendees took advantage of opportunities to make, meet the Makerspace Supervisors, participate in a spooky VR experience, partake in the caramel apple bar, and take photos in the All Makers Eve Photobooth!
Creativity on Display
Creativity was on display throughout the evening! Everyone was invited and characters of all kinds were in attendance, including Steve from Blue’s Clues, the Scooby Gang, Boba Fett, Slimer and a Ghostbuster, and the Grim Reaper!
More than 45 individuals participated in the costume contest, with the top three vote-getters receiving prizes! Even though they chose not to participate in the costume contest, a majority of the individuals in attendance donned a component of a costume and/or dressed in festive attire!
Hundreds of pumpkins, leaves, witch hats, and bats were designed and decorated, and the submissions to the All Makers Creation Contest were on display as well.
2024 All Makers Creation Contest Winners
The All Makers Creation Contest Winners were announced during the All Makers Eve Event! Iowa State Students submitted creations to the All Makers Creation Contest from October 1 – October 28th in hopes of receiving a $100 credit to use to purchase materials at the Innovation Supply Station (located in the Student Innovation Center) to continue to fuel their creativity!
The 2024 All Makers Creation Contest Winners and their creations are:
- Caden Kraft, The NTPixie
- This is a nixie tube clock that uses IN-12 nixie tubes to display the time. From the PCB to the 3D printed casing every part of the clock is custom made. A unique feature with this clock is its ability to sync over WiFi with NTP time servers to automatically sync the time and figure out its timezone.
- Student Innovation Makerspaces Utilized to create the NTPixie included the Electronics, Textiles and 3D Printing (room 2222).
- Ryan Schlesinger – The Bikestrument
- The Bikestrument was made out of 3 thrifted bicycles for the Theatre of Vibrations studio. We were inspired by Ragbrai and the biking culture of Iowa. The instrument consists of materials from the bikes, notably using the pedals rotation to move a bow made from handlebars over a set of strings.
- Student Innovation Makerspaces Utilized to create The Bikestrument included the Metal and Wood Shop and the Paint and Finishing Shop.
- Gabriella Saholt – Behold
- Behold is part of an image series inspired by vintage horror movie posters’ intense and powerful imagery. Created in the SIC’s Digital Media Studio, this image uses various lighting and camera equipment to convey a similar dramatic feeling through high contrast and coloring. Model: Samantha Huynh
- Student Innovation Makerspaces Utilized to create Behold included the Digital Media Studio.
- Jayce Abens – Handmade Acoustic Guitar
- This guitar was built from scratch and shaped by hand. It is constructed from African mahogany, Sitka spruce, fumed eucalyptus, maple, and purple heart woods, each selected for their aesthetic and tonal qualities. Its dreadnaught body shape produces a rich, powerful sound.
