The Student Innovation Center’s Making 101 series provides the training required to use most of the machines and equipment in our Makerspaces. These trainings cover the basics of both the equipment and software unique to our Makerspaces.

To participate, users need to:

  •  Complete a Canvas Enrollment Request for the Makerspace they would like to use.
  •  Complete the online Canvas training.
  •  Sign up for a Making 101 session for hands-on training.

All users must complete both the online Canvas training and the hands on training before using the Makerspaces.

Please do not register for a hands-on training, until you have completed the corresponding Canvas course.

    3D Printing Bambu 101

    This hands-on training session introduces the fundamentals of the Bambu X1C and H2D 3D printers along with the Bambu Studio slicer. Please bring your laptop with Bambu Studio installed ahead of time. (A free download link is available on Canvas.)

    Participants will have the option to complete one complimentary print at the time of training depending on machine availability.

    3D Printing Ultimaker 101

    This hands-on training covers basic operations of the Cura slicer software and the Ultimaker S5 3D printer. Please bring your laptop with Cura installed ahead of time. (A free download link is available on Canvas). Participants will have the option to complete one complimentary print at the time of training depending on machine availability.

    Resin 3D Printing FormLabs 101

    This hands-on training covers basic operations of the Form 3, Form 3L resin printers, and Preform slicer software. Bring your laptop and install Preform (free software link on Canvas). Participants will have the option to complete one complimentary resin print at the time of training depending on machine availability.

    Embroidery 101

    This hands-on training utilizes the DesignShop software, Melco UI, and the Melco digital embroidery machines. A limited selection of embroidery thread, stabilizer and sample fabric is provided for the training.

    Juki Industrial Sewing 101

    This hands-on training covers basic operations of the Juki Industrial Lockstitch, Coverstitch, and Serger sewing machines along with the Hi-Steam gravity feed iron. Sample fabric and thread are provided for training.

    Universal Laser Cutting 101

    This hands-on training covers the use of Adobe Illustrator alongside the Universal laser software and machines. Sample wood will be provided for practice during the session.

    This hands-on training session covers the basic operation of soldering equipment, power supplies, oscilloscopes, and waveform generators. During training all necessary materials will be provided for testing and demonstrating the functions of the equipment.

    Hand Tools 101

    This hour and a half long training is a hands-on learning experience that covers the basics of using various hand tools  in the Wood Shop. Participants will gain practical skills and knowledge in working with a range of tools including drill, driver, chisels, saws, plunge router, jig saw, impact driver, brad nailer, crown stapler, circular saw, track saw, orbital sander and sandpaper grits.

    Woodworking 101

    This two-hour training introduces the woodworking capabilities of the Wood Shop. Cut and finish a piece of poplar (7.5” x 12.5” x .75”), learning the basic skills for milling wood. Includes hands-on training for:

    • the jointer
    • planer
    • miter saw
    • drum sander

    Completion counts as hands-on training for that equipment.

    This two-hour training introduces more woodworking capabilities of the Wood Shop. Includes hands-on training for:

    • table saw

    This two-hour training covers preliminary training and an introduction to the metalworking capabilities of the Metal Shop. Learn to cut, bend, and weld sheet metal into a metal box. Includes hands-on training for:

    This hour and half long training is part two of the hands-on training for the Metal Shop. Includes hands-on training for:

    Wood Lathe 101 – Spindle Training

    This hour and a half long training provides an introduction to wood lathes in the Wood Shop. Learn how the wood lathe functions and get a feel for operating the equipment. We’ll cover some safe handling with various tool types and machine controls.  Watch a brief demo on correct usage and then get the opportunity to try it yourself.  You will have almost an hour of time to practice the skills shown and discussed and ask questions with a Shop Supervisor.

    Training counts as Spindle Turning. After completion you may register for the Bowl Turning Workshop.

    Wood Lathe 102 – Bowl Making

    This 2 – 2.5 hour workshop is an additional hands-on learning experience with our Wood Lathe machines to turn a bowl. Users must have completed the Wood Lathe 101 before registering for this workshop.

    We will discuss glue-ups, face plates, and wood preparations; before you work on creating a small Poplar bowl from our training supplies.

    We will also demo and discuss sanding procedures, staining & finishing.

    Mill Training 101

    This two hour training is a hands-on learning experience with our Kent CNC Mill machines.  Completing Hands-on training will likely require multiple sessions; but we encourage everyone to try it out!

    During this introduction we will discuss safety guidelines and safe handling procedures for types of tooling, loading/unloading tools, setting Datum information, and creating a basic facing operation with the DRO control panel.

    You will need to sign up for Mill Training 102 to complete the hands-on training and take a “proficiency test” to become certified to operate the machine.

    Mill Training 102

    This two hour workshop is a hands-on learning experience with our Kent CNC Mill machines.  Continuing from a previous introduction/training session.

    If you’re looking to start Mill training; please sign up for Mill Training 101.

    The end of Hands-on training will have a “proficiency test” so you can show the skills you’ve learned.  You will face training materials, use the DRO panel to program tool paths, pockets, and hole patterns based off a provided schematic.  This test is not graded for points and may be attempted multiple times so each user can get the practice required to successfully use the equipment after training. Once shop supervisors give approval you will receive your hands-on training badge stamp.

    Metal Lathe Training 101

    This three hour workshop is a hands-on learning experience with our Clausing Metal Lathe machines.  Completing Hands-on training will likely require multiple sessions; but we encourage everyone to try it out!

    We will discuss safety guidelines and safe handling procedures for turning, boring, drilling, and tapping.

    The end of Hands-on training will have a “proficiency test” so you can show the skills you’ve learned.  Reducing the outer diameter of an Aluminum Rod, cutting a thread, drilling, and boring out the center; and then parting off the test piece.  This test is not graded for points and may be attempted multiple times so each user can get the practice required for use after training completion. Once shop supervisors give approval you will receive hands-on training badge stamp.

Digital Media Studio Makerspace 101s

    Photography 101

    This one hour and fifteen minute workshop covers basic camera settings for photography. Learn about the exposure triangle of shutter speed, aperture, and ISO, and basics about focus, depth of field, white balance, and lenses. Join us in the Digital Media Studio and bring your own camera if you have one to learn what the buttons mean.

    Podcasting 101

    This one hour and fifteen workshop covers the basics of video podcasting. Learn the studio equipment, recording techniques, doing a test podcast, and simple editing in the Digital Media Studio.

    Video Production 101

    This two hour workshop dives into video production and post-production. Learn basic camera operations in the large studio with the URSA broadcast cameras and record a short video. Then try some basic video editing techniques using Davinci Resolve by Blackmagic Design. Elevate your video skills during this hands-on workshop in the Digital Media Studio.

  • Lighting 101

    This one hour hands-on training shows you how to use the Digital Media Studio Stage lighting, as well as the basics of lighting for interviews, and how to manipulate the light on a subject or item you are photographing or filming. This will help you understand the basic lighting needs for digital media content creation.

    Letterpress 101

    Make a lasting impression in the Letterpress Lab! Join printmaking faculty Raluca Iancu in a three-hour workshop where you will learn the basics setting type and letterpress printing to make your very own letterpress poster, free of cost. This workshop will count towards your hands-on training for this space. Come prepared with a word or a sentence that you would like to print.
